Natural Disasters
Australia is renowned for its extreme conditions and this report will illustrate two natural disasters: Drought and Fire.
First, this paper will discuss the concept of an Australian drought and more specifically the 1983 drought in Southeast Australia. A drought is a sustained period of time in which there is no consistent precipitation over a certain area of land. They can occur for many reasons such as prolonged dry spells, and fluctuations in rainfall patterns due to El Nino events. An El Nino is a sequence of changes in circulations across the Pacific and Indian Oceans when warming is strong. They begin with a slight alteration in sea surface temperatures. This then alters winds along the equator, which therefore change the ocean currents. The currents adjust the sea surface temperature even more.
