Fear and Loathing in the Desert - Essay and Term Paper
Edward Abbey, an environmentalist and author describes the desert in his essay “The Great American Desert”(1997) as a horrible place in an attempt to make people stay away. One of the things he describes is the countless danger from insects, animals, vegetation and the environment itself. All which are equally deadly and unfriendly. Another thing he describes is how all deserts are the same in harshness between all four deserts. How one is no better than the other. The only thing he doesn’t like about deserts is the manmade objects in the desert. Another thing he brings up is if you are going to go to the desert some rules on etiquette you should follow when out in the desert so that you can survive and so that the desert can survive you, if you’re foolish enough to go into the desert. On the other hand, perhaps he’s trying to just scare away the boy and girl scouts who are looking for cheap adventure with no respect for the environmen......
