Hard Times, by Charles Dickens, is the tragic tale of Victorian society’s misplaced utilitarian philosophies and the consequential mechanization of human beings. The above quotation holds the opinion that people must be selfish and cater to self-interest in others in order to be successful in the Victorian “social system.” When applied to both Hard Times and to our own society, this statement’s pessimistic views are applicable, and do hold true when analyzing not only characters from the novel, but human culture in general.
