The Sahara Desert is translated into “The Great Desert”. It is the world’s largest desert. The land stretches from the outskirts of the Atlantic Ocean including parts of the Mediterranean Sea. From north to south the Sahara is between 800 and 1,200 miles and is at least 3,000 miles from east to west (1). The span of 3,500,000 square miles covers most of northern Africa. The desert itself is slightly smaller then the continent of the United States, as well as it being larger then Australia. The Sahara Desert has history that piles up from as much as three million years ago. Ever since the Ice Age, the Sahara Desert has been much more of a wetter place. Prior to the Ice Age there were a couple thousand known people that lived in the desert.
