Introduction
I live in Tuskegee, Alabama, which is the famous home of Booker T. Washington and George Washington Carver. In more recent times, the Tuskegee Airmen of World War II have been memorialized in books and movies. The infamous syphilis experiment of the federal government also took place in Tuskegee, Alabama.
Tuskegee today is a city of 11,741 residents. It is the county seat of one of the poorest counties in the State of Alabama and nearly 96 percent of its population is African-American (U.S. Census Bureau, 2004). Following school integration, a large percentage of the white residents of Tuskegee moved to Auburn, Alabama; Montgomery, Alabama, or one of the other nearby communities. Tuskegee is a city of contrasts with approximately one-half of the population having at least a college degree while another one-fourth percent do not have a high school diploma.
