“Read Around” the Colour Purple
Alice Walker is an award winning author. She writes novels, short stories, essays and poems. She is a critic as well as an editor. She is best known for her novel, The Colour Purple (CLC, pp422). Alice Walker was born February 9, 1944 just before the end of World War II in rural Georgia. She was the youngest child in a family of eight to Willie Lee and Millie Walker (CLC, pp422). At the age of eight, Alice Walker lost her eye sight from one eye because she was accidentally shot with a BB gun by her brother. Alice Walker was a confident individual until this incident. She then became very secluded and distant from others. She thought of suicide but found comfort in writing.
