The other day I was reading through a popular motorbike magazine (names will not be necessary) and I turned to an ad for Aprilla motorbikes, with its new “V power”. What this ad included was a rather small motorbike accompanied by a rather large picture of a woman’s chest behind it. It certainly caught my eye, but it started me on a different topic which is often talked about, the role of gender in ads.
Obviously this ad was is for motorbikes and its new V engine, although that’s not that interesting unless there’s something there to attract the readers’ attention. So that’s probably why they stuck an oversize picture of a woman’s chest into the background of the ad. It attracts readers and potential buyers. Now motorbike riding is predominately a male based sport, I have nothing wrong with woman motorbike riders but it’s just something you don’t see that often.
