One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest was a movie released in 1975 directed by Milos Forman and based on the 1962 novel by Ken Kesey. The film’s main character, Randal McMurphy (played by Jack Nicholson), is sent to a psychiatric hospital from a prison work farm. McMurphy is under the false assumption that life in the mental hospital will be easy as compared to serving his work detail in prison and, therefore, fakes his insanity. In the opening scenes of the movie, as he is being interviewed by the hospital’s head psychiatrist, the viewer learns that McMurphy has several assaults on his police record and is currently in trouble for statutory rape. McMurphy has to be evaluated to determine whether or not he is mentally ill or if he will have to return to prison.
