Males have conducted our society in such a way as to show their superiority over women. Ranging from social to economic to familial, our civilization is mainly patriarchal, controlled by males and organized to elevate the status of men while maintaining the subjugation of women. However, it was not until more recently that a clearly defined feminist movement arose, aiming to provide woman with the same opportunities and rights as men. Through this movement rose feminist criticism, a group of critics attempting to bring to light the misogyny of the past through the examination of both male and female literature. Feminist critics have a number of objectives, ranging from rediscovering the literature of female writers to analyzing the phrases of works from a female perspective, gaining insight into the cultural values of the time through the depiction and roles of the characters.
