History of Baseball - Essay and Term Paper

The history of baseball traces all the way back to the early 1800’s. By 1860’s the sport became very popular and soon became known as “America’s Pastime.” Alexander Joy Cartwright invented the modern baseball field in 1845. Cartwright and the members of his team New York Knickerbockers Base Ball Club made up the first rules and regulations for the modern game of baseball. Baseball was based off of the English game called Rounders. Rounders became popular in the United States in the early 19th century, where the game was known as "townball", "base", or "baseball". Cartwright based the official modern rules of baseball off of Rounders. The first recorded baseball game was in 1846 and Cartwright's Knickerbockers played the New York Baseball Club and lost.
