Dr. Shingo presents a strong and well founded explanation of TMS, and that it is not just Kan Ban. One of the key foundations of TMS is that it incorporates a basic concept of waste reduction and one tool is Kan Ban. The primary tool discussed is what Dr. Shingo coined as Single Minute Exchange of Dies or SMED. SMED was developed through a series of challenges placed before him over a period of several years. One of the first challenges that had been placed in front of him in 1970 was to reduce a change over time from 4 hours to under 2, since that was the time that German workers reported at a Volkswagen plant. ......
