To his left lay a corpse. To his right lay another. The traveller knew little of either of them, and cared even less. All he knew of the dead old woman was that she had owned a strong horse, and all he knew of the young man lying near her was that he did not own one.
By chance, the old woman and the traveller had met each other on the road right by a large black tree, in which a bandit had been hiding in ambush. Out he had jumped, wielding a rock in each hand, just as the old woman had finished her hi’s and how-do-you-do’s. He had demanded the old woman give him her horse. She declined. He threw the rock in his right hand. The traveller watched and noticed.
