ROLE OF GRETCHEN IN FAUSTS REDEMPTION - Essay and Term Paper
Goethe’s re-working of the original Faust story has, perhaps inevitably some added scenes and characters which have caused many critics and scholars to question and attempt to ascertain to which purpose, if any, Goethe intended these additions. One of the most heavily debated of these inventions is the character of Gretchen, and the entire tragedy thereof. Some critics and scholars argue that the Gretchen-Tragedy is superfluous to the play in its entirety , whereas others are of the opinion that it is undoubtedly “the love of Faust and Gretchen [which] is eventually seen to have redemptive power...” , giving definite weight to the character and role of Gretchen. This essay purports to illustrate the truth in the latter argument; that the role of Gretchen in Goethe’s play, Faust; Der Tragödie Erster Teil, is of the utmost significance in ensuring Faust’s eventual redemption.
