Romeo and Juilet - Essay and Term Paper
Romeo and Juliet is a timeless tale of forbidden love. It is a tragedy of two young lovers whose love was destined for destruction. Shakespeare explores many themes in Romeo and Juliet, including an ancient feud between the Montague family and the Capulet family. It also involves teenage love, hate and fate. Another theme which is conveyed by Shakespeare is light and dark. Romeo, on a number of occasions compares Juliet’s beauty to light. When Romeo first sees Juliet he immediately compares her to the light that comes through the Capulet’s great hall.
“O, she doth teach the torches to burn bright, Juliet is the light that frees me from the darkness of my perpetual melancholia.” Act 1 Scene 4
Whereas darkness is portrayed as the central motive of woe. The obstacle of them being together further prolongs their woes and unfortunate events. Romeo exclaims
“More dark and dark our woes,” Act 3 Scene 5
