In the poem Still Life by Jonathan Galassi, the persona is on a camping trip with another person. The camping trip takes place near a lake that must have overflowed during long rain showers engrossing barns and trees within its waters. This poem is a detailed recollection of that specific camping trip shared with another person and the memories still stuck in the persona’s mind. After the persona recalls the trip, he goes on to reflect on what happened during that time and connect it to the present.
The first stanza starts off with a generalized statement that certain places are connected to certain memories. It also infers that if some specific time can’t be forgotten and hangs over you it’s always there, hence, “Somewhere you’re always twenty-four.”
In the second line a feeling of comfort is brought about by a word most associated with relaxation, “lie”, which reaps the feeling of tranquility yet also brings about deceit. When ......
