The Mold of the Outcast in Of Mice and Men - Essay and Term Paper
Two things that everyone in the world needs is friends and family. Without friends or family, a person cannot be emotionally stable. If one has no friends, they have little to no standing in society, and have no place amongst other people. An outcast is often defined as one who is rejected from a society or from a population. In "Of Mice and Men", Lennie is the obvious outcast, given his large size and mental disability. However, he is not totally rejected from society, considering he still has George Milton, his best friend and fellow drifter, at his side. Some characters, such as Crooks, Candy, and Curley's wife constantly display signs of loneliness throughout the novel. Throughout the novel, John Steinbeck, the author, shows the drastic effects of loneliness on a character. Being the outcast in a society is not easy, and several characters in the novel demonstrate this.
