Literary Analysis: Beowulf as a heroic actor
With superhuman strength and tenacity unmatched by any man of his time, Beowulf may appear to some as a primeval super hero that would rival the modern day Superman. However, the distinct difference that sets Beowulf apart from that of a super hero is his knowledge that he is human. With each battle that he faces, he is aware that his mortality is, most certainly, at stake. These risks that he takes are not for his own glory but for the glory of his king and people. Underneath the grandeur of the great Geat warrior’s strength and super human abilities lies the true essence of heroism: self-sacrifice, courage, and nobility of character.
