Bill Bryson's America - Essay and Term Paper
America is often described as the land of the free. Bill Bryson, the author of I’m a stranger here myself , makes the well backed point: what good is freedom when Americans would rather shop than save the environment? Bryson describes many situations in which America proves to be an excellent place to live, but this point is overshadowed by his underlying disappointment in the American people. What good is freedom when half the country would rather work with a rapist than a pothead? Bryson’s choice of topics and the way he illustrates American life, makes all Americans feel ashamed and embarrassed. In a country plagued by ignorance, Bryson expresses his disappointment and in Americans wasteful and lazy lifestyles, ineffective Governmental organizations, useless laws, and American incompetence.
Bryson describes America as having a vast and gorgeous landscape, but then determines that the only way this landscape is seen is by car.......
