A comparison of 8 children's book in regards to media influence on gender identity and roles - Essay and Term Paper

Disney’s the Rescuers Down Under (1993) was chosen because it appears to be written strictly for entertainment purposes and it bears the name of an international icon: Disney. Being it that Disney is known for its family friendly productions one would think that this book would hold high standards for children including diversity, gender neutral roles, etc. However, contrary to one’s thoughts the text proved that even in children’s books there are things that teach children and influence them in the decision of gender identity and their own personal gender role. Some example of this is when the story opened with a boy, Cody, hiking. Then, Cody runs into his “worried” female friend who is a kangaroo, Faloo (Disney’s the Rescuers Down Under, 2). Later as the story climaxes, Wilbur, a male albatross has to sit on the eagle’s eggs, but he was not happy about his assignment. Another example is how Bernard and Miss Bianca have a tradit......
