Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., was a great leader in the American civil rights movement, using his faith and studies to initiate a movement based on non-violent resistance. While his predecessors and contemporaries espoused more confrontational approaches, Dr. King preached that love for the white man – not violence – would win him over and gain equality for blacks. During his campaign, King led marches and peaceful demonstrations, and he gave numerous speeches in an effort to gain the equal rights that he and so many others felt were being denied of blacks in this country. King’s religious non-violence was a mixture of Christianity and Satyagraha: a method of non-violent resistance first introduced by Mahatma Gandhi to free India from the British Empire and played an integral part in King’s success in the fight against racism in the United States.
