Treatment of Aboriginal Australians over Time - Essay and Term Paper
The position of Aboriginal Peoples in Australia has changed greatly since WWII from one of no recognition to one of equal representation in society. Until WWII there was little change. However since that time, the perceived worth of Aboriginal Australians has increased tremendously. Immediately following WWII, until 1946, Aborigines living like white people were offered citizenship and rights. Many referred to these as ‘dog licenses’ and declined.
As for the general population, Aboriginal servicemen were given the vote in 1949 following armed service for Australia. This vote was not compulsory and few used the right.
In 1960, the relatively new allowances for the elderly and disabled were made available to Aborigines, as was the non-compulsory vote in 1962.
