The Populist and Progressive movements occurred at a time in American history when a major transition from an agrarian to an industrial and urban society was taking place. Traditionally, the ideals of American government were thought to be rooted and formed on the farm and in small villages and that its central ideas were founded in rural sentiments and on rural metaphors. The beginnings of democracy were advocated by farmers, and hence we often speak of “grass-roots democracy.” Since farming was thought to be a sacred practice, so too was thought of democracy, and when industrialization disrupted this sacredness, the people were shocked and a sense of anxiety erupted. Progressivism, in a large sense, was a movement to restore the economic individualism and political democracy that was destroyed by the aforementioned industrialization.
