Within the Haiti culture, illnesses are thought to occur due to either natural or supernatural causes. Natural illnesses may be caused by an imbalance with nature (hot food vs. cold food, light food vs. heavy food), and supernatural illnesses caused by sympathetic magic (voodoo doll, angering one’s loa, hex, etc.). 1.
Haitians self image philosophy is that race is the same as nation and they will only be identified as Haitians. Bodily characteristics are black curly hair, dark skin, dark eyes, and very little body hair. Quite similar to African Americans, but Haitian immigrants do not identify with this group. Obesity is a sign of health, and being thin is a sign of poor health. The upper class in Haitian culture traditionally have lighter skin, more money, and better education.
