Lord Of the Flies - The Counch - Essay and Term Paper

In the book “Lord Of the Flies,” the conch symbolizes order and civilization on the island. The conch was found on the beach a few days after the boy’s plane crashed. It helps the boys come together as a team. Later we see that what the conch represented gets ruined and doesn’t mean the same thing anymore. In the beginning the conch brings the boys together, and helps to calm them, and brings order to the island. For example, the very powerful conch is the way you would get permission to speak at meetings, if you didn’t have it you couldn’t speak. It symbolized that the person with the conch could control who was to talk and who wasn’t, and ultimately who would control the island. Also the possession of the conch was the reason fights between the boys would occur. Additionally the conch was found on the beach, which suggests that it was not very valuable. Later it turned into something of much worth and was fought over. In conclusion......
